Uncover the Enigmatic 'Artistic Turtle' in Penang
George Town, Penang: A captivating new art gallery, shaped like a turtle, has emerged as a stunning addition to the island's coastline. The RM100 million Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, located on the Light Waterfront in Gelugor, showcases an impressive collection of over 300 original artworks by its founder, Lin Xiang Xiong. With a rotating selection from his extensive portfolio of 1,000 pieces, this gallery promises an ever-evolving artistic experience.
Lin Xiang Xiong, a 80-year-old artist, draws inspiration from the turtle, a revered symbol of harmony and longevity in Chinese culture. He explains, 'I envisioned this gallery as a place where diverse cultures converge, nurturing dreams and fostering creativity.'
Born in Guangdong, China, in 1945, Lin's artwork is deeply rooted in Southeast Asian culture. His pieces often depict the lives of local communities, addressing themes such as poverty and social issues. Lin's work has gained international recognition, with exhibitions at prestigious venues like the National Art Museum of China and the Unesco headquarters in Paris.
At the gallery's entrance, a captivating sculpture of seven figures lifting a stone together symbolizes unity, reflecting Lin's philosophy of 'Art for Peace'. The large windows offer breathtaking views of the sea and the iconic Penang Bridge.
One of the gallery's signature series, 'The Vicissitudes of Life', comprises 99 artworks that explore profound themes such as war, pollution, and poverty. Lin's ability to capture the complexities of human existence through art is truly remarkable.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, speaking at the launch ceremony, emphasized the gallery's significance. He stated, 'This gallery enriches Penang's cultural landscape, embodying the vision of Penang2030, which strives for balanced human development, creativity-driven economic growth, and community well-being through art and knowledge.'
The launch ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, including Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, former Chief Ministers Lim Guan Eng and Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, and other prominent state leaders. The gallery is set to open its doors by mid-December, inviting art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in Lin's captivating world.
