Street Fighter 6: C. Viper & Sagat Return! Devs Discuss Future Characters & Gameplay Changes (2025)

The upcoming 40th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise has fans buzzing with anticipation, especially with the recent return of fan-favorite characters like C. Viper and Sagat in Street Fighter 6. In an exclusive interview, HiFight sat down with the game's Director, Takayuki Nakayama, and Producer, Shuhei Matsumoto, to discuss the current season and their vision for the future.

The interview, conducted at the Thailand Game Show, focused on the highly anticipated release of C. Viper, a character known for her technical prowess. Nakayama explained their approach to balancing Viper's appeal, ensuring she remained true to her roots while also attracting a wider audience.

"We wanted to preserve the technical aspects that made Viper so beloved in Street Fighter 4, but also make her more accessible. That's why we introduced the Focus Force move, a nod to the classic Focus attack, to add depth to her design," Nakayama said.

However, HiFight pointed out that Capcom also made some adjustments to Viper's controls, such as her feint cancel shortcuts, making her easier to manage in Street Fighter 6.

Matsumoto added, "It's exciting to see Street Fighter 4 players returning to the game, and with C. Viper's unique charm, we're seeing a lot of new players drawn to her. It's a great feeling to know that players are enjoying the character we've worked so hard on."

But here's where it gets controversial... While Viper's return has been a success, some fans are eager to hear more about her impact on the game's meta and how the developers plan to support her long-term.

During the interview, HiFight also delved into the inclusion of Sagat, another iconic character, in Street Fighter 6. Nakayama revealed that implementing Sagat with the new parry system was a challenge, requiring them to experiment and refine his gameplay.

"With Sagat, we wanted to add new kick moves and design him to excel at mid-range combat. He's a character that evolved significantly through playtesting and adjustments. We wanted to give him a fresh feel while staying true to his roots," Nakayama explained.

And this is the part most people miss... Nakayama confirmed that Sagat's stage in Street Fighter 6 is set in a different location than his classic arenas, moving away from the iconic reclining Buddha statue.

"In Street Fighter 4's story, Sagat relocated to a rural area, so this stage reflects that change and offers a new environment for players to explore," Nakayama said.

When asked about the possibility of other Thai fighters joining the roster, Nakayama hinted at the potential inclusion of 'Nampueng,' a character they've been nurturing since Street Fighter 5.

"We're thinking long-term with Nampueng. While there's no guarantee she'll be playable in SF6, we're considering her for future installments. We want to explore the master-disciple dynamic further, which we've already seen with characters like Ed and Kimberly," Nakayama added.

But here's a twist... Nakayama jokingly mentioned that Fatal Fury might have beaten them to the punch with their own master-disciple characters, like Preecha, Rock, and Hokutomaru.

The full interview covers more ground, including the recent V-Rivals event featuring Justin Wong and Betty, and the future of offline tournaments in the Capcom Pro Tour.

So, what do you think? Are you excited about the future of Street Fighter 6 and the potential for new characters? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your thoughts and predictions.
