Lamine Yamal Targeted by 60% of Racist Attacks Online in Spain - Shocking La Liga Study (2025)

The shocking truth about online racism in Spanish football has been laid bare, with a new study revealing the extent of abuse aimed at Barcelona star Lamine Yamal. A staggering 60% of all racist attacks online in Spain were directed at Yamal, according to the Spanish Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia (Oberaxe).

This eye-opening report, obtained by El Pais, highlights the sheer magnitude of the problem. Using artificial intelligence, Oberaxe detected over 33,000 attacks during the 2024-25 La Liga season, with the majority originating from Facebook and Twitter. But here's where it gets controversial: Yamal, a Spain international, received twice as much abuse as Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior, who was targeted with 29% of all attacks.

The study also reveals that Real Madrid and Barcelona are the primary targets of online hate speech, with their players bearing the brunt of the vitriol. Vinicius' teammate, Kylian Mbappe, received 3% of all attacks, while Yamal's colleague, Alejandro Balde, was targeted with 2%. Other players, like Brahim Diaz and Inaki Williams, also faced abuse, with Real Valladolid, Valencia, and Athletic Club among the top teams receiving hate speech online.

And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these attacks extends beyond the players. In May 2025, five individuals were handed suspended prison sentences for racially abusing Vinicius during a match. This ruling, described as "unprecedented" by La Liga, sends a strong message against racism in Spanish football. Similarly, in October, Spain's anti-violence commission recommended a fine for a Real Oviedo supporter allegedly abusing Barcelona's Marcus Rashford.

Despite these efforts, the fight against online racism continues. Yamal, Vinicius, and their teammates will return to La Liga action this Sunday, with Barcelona facing Celta Vigo and Real Madrid traveling to Rayo Vallecano. As the season progresses, the question remains: Will Spanish football authorities and fans unite to eradicate this toxic behavior, or will these incidents continue to mar the beautiful game?
